As part of Southern Water’s ongoing environmental legislation obligations, main contractor Galliford Try were contracted to undertake asset upgrades to 22 sites across the South East operating region. Hanevo were sub-contracted to Principal Contractor Galliford Try on these notifiable projects to investigate & implement necessary improvements to flows & spills monitoring (Flows 3&4) to pump stations & sewage treatment works with civil engineering, mechanical & electrical works undertaken in house or with specialist supply chain partners.
Our first requirement was to survey, investigate, design and implement upgrades to the existing facility to ensure
accurate monitoring, back to the central
Southern Water system, of flows into and
from the site in storm conditions.
All works were required to be designed so that installation could be done whilst the existing facility remained fully operational.
Our solution involved the introduction of a new storm overflow chamber which housed the new MAG meter to monitor flows. This would then be used to monitor diverted flows from either the existing wet well or storm tank outlet, with the current outflow removed or temporarily bypassed from service.
To enable this to be installed concurrently with ongoing site operations, the new
chamber was installed on an agreed location on the site, with new below ground pipework to allow full and final diversion once works were complete.
As sub-contractor to Galliford Try, we were required to work in full accordance with their overarching CPH&S Plan. Our RAMS were developed collaboratively to ensure full alignment to expectations on site. We were involved in pre-start design & risk workshops, providing buildability advice to the design team & Principal Designer. We supervised all works under our control, co-ordinating with the wider workforce of the Principal Contractor. This included on-site management of supply chain partners for specialist elements (i.e. MCERTS/Emersons) reviewing process & incorporating into RAMS.
Some the new chamber being constructed, were on public land, we also supported the Client, Southern Water, and Principal Contractor in their discussions with land owners.
